Award for Kurup

The Anti-Smoking Society, under the patronage of the Health Education Centre, Ministry of Public Health of Qatar, has conferred the `Humanity Service Award' on Justice K. Narayana Kurup.The award, in recognition of the "outstanding contributions rendered by Justice Kurup to humanity in the fields of Public Health, Human Rights, Environment and Animal Rights", was presented to him by Khalifa Al Jaberj, Chairman, Tobacco Law Follow up Committee of the Ministry of Public Health, Qatar, at Doha on January 29.

The Kerala High Court was lauded for its landmark verdict imposing a ban on smoking in public places "which has served as a trendsetter and an eye-opener for the rest of India and the world"¸ a press statement from Amanullah, Secretary, Anti-Smoking Society, Doha, said.

Justice Kurup said he considered the award as an honour bestowed on the Indian judiciary rather than on him personally.
