Diwakar Babu sends resignation to Sonia

By Our Staff Correspondent

BELLARY Jan. 31. M.Diwakar Babu, Minister of State for Cooperation, has sent his resignation to the Congress President, Sonia Gandhi, expressing his displeasure over the failure of the party to implement the promises made to the people of Bellary District when she contested the 1999 elections to the Lok Sabha from Bellary Constituency.

Mr. Babu was not available for his comment.

Sources close to him told The Hindu that the party had promised that if voted to power it would nominate a Muslim to the post of Chairman of Bellary Urban Development Authority (BUDA) and a member of the Kuruba community to the Legislative Council. Although the Government completed three years, there was no sign of the party keeping these promises.

Funds were set aside for improving canals in the district under the Rs. 3,300-crore Special Package. But the work had not been started.

The other schemes were progressing at a snail's pace.

The package was announced by the Chief Minister, S.M.Krishna, as a token of gratitude to the people of Bellary for returning the Congress candidates in all the elections to the Lok Sabha, particularly Ms. Gandhi. It was a time-bound package and had to be implemented before the S.M.Krishna Government completed its term.

Sources said Mr. Babu had taken exception to encouragement given to those involved in "anti-party activities" in the district.
