Heavy snowfall in Jammu & Kashmir

Jammu Jan. 31. The 300-km long Jammu-Srinagar national highway at Patnitop, Qazigund and Jawahar tunnel was closed today following heavy snowfall and rain lashing since Thursday.

Landslips have also occurred at various places due to heavy rain.

The famous picnic spot, Patnitop, one of the highest spots on the Jammu-Srinagar highway, witnessed first-ever snowfall of the season.

The only road linking Kashmir valley with rest of the country was closed for traffic. A large number of vehicles, including over 600 passengers, were stranded at various places.

The Border Roads Organisations have been pressed into service to clear the roads, official sources said. The northern most Kupwara district also received the first snowfall of the season while its adjoining mountain ranges received heavy snowfall. The famous Ski resort of Gulmarg received about two feet of snowfall. The border town of Uri in Baramulla district also witnessed snow.

The Pir Panjal range of Himalayas dividing Jammu and Kashmir divisions and the famous holy shrine of Vashino Devi Shrine in Udhampur district of Jammu also received fresh snowfall.
