By S. Ganesan
Hearing resumed before M. Jayapal, judge, when Mr. Mani, one of the accused, was produced before the court after a few months. He ordered that Mr. Mani, incarcerated in the Mysore Central Prison, be now lodged in the Tiruchi prison till the next hearing on January 23. The case relates to hurling of a hand-grenade by Kannan, a Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam cadre, who along with two others, was intercepted by the police at the Ammapettai checkpost in Thanjavur district while the three were travelling in a car on May 25, 1994. While the police nabbed Rajan, the other two escaped. A few policemen and some passersby were injured. An injured pedestrian died later, while Kannan committed suicide during a Q-branch raid in Chennai. Eighteen accused, including Kannan, were booked under the TADA on charges of smuggling explosives for the LTTE. Mr. Mani was charged with helping the accused procure explosives from Salem. Hearing in the case could not be held for the past few months after the Karnataka STF detained Mr. Mani in a bandit Veerappan-related case.
