Mahon stuns Siributwong

By Our Sports Reporter

KOLKATA JAN. 20. Seeded players made merry with almost all of them winning comfortably against unseeded opponents on the opening day of the main draw of the Pepsodent-ONGC ITF junior tennis championship at the DKS courts here on Monday.

The only upset of the day was sixth-seeded Kirati Siributwong's (Thailand) loss to Tristan Farron Mahon of Ireland. The Irish player, ranked 300, ousted the 207th-ranked Siributwong 6-1, 3-6, 6-4.

Top-seeded Chatwinder Singh of India, ranked 115 in the world, defeated Min Joon-Chong of Korea 6-4, 6-4, beginning his campaign on a confident note.

In a match that saw most of the games going against serve, Singh was broken in the fifth and ninth games. But the Indian replied strongly managing to break Min back in the sixth, eighth and 10th games to take the first set 6-4. In the second set, Chatwinder continued to rule and broke Min twice to decide the match in his favour.

Local boy, seventh-seeded Rupesh Roy defeated Kim Jang-Hyuck of Korea

6-2, 6-3 in 51 minutes.

Meanwhile, Vikas Punna disposed of compatriot and `lucky-loser' Vivek Shokeen in straight sets, while wildcard Siddharth Gulati was sent packing by qualifier Prashanth V.S. Natarajan in staright sets. Another qualifier Anshuman Dutta made short work of Uzbekistan's Timur Shamuradov to set up a second round clash against the Irish giant killer Mahon.

In the girls' section, which saw action in the top half of the draw, top-seeded Tangphong Montinee of Thailand lost just one game before beating lucky loser Micah Muhury of India, while third-seeded Sanaa Bhambri of India beat compatriot Pooja Kommireddi 6-4, 6-0.
