Internet security cell to be set up

By Our Special Correspondent

Bangalore Jan. 20. The Government of India will be setting up a Centre for Internet Security Expertise cell in Delhi at a cost of Rs. 20 million dollars next month to address security concerns with regard to information systems.

Disclosing this at the national summit on "Information security management systems", organised by BSI Management Systems here, the Director of the Software Technology Parks of India, B.V. Naidu, said the threat of information warfare was looming large, particularly with no nation having sovereignty over cyberspace. He said information warfare was becoming a probability for military control, besides control over the economy.

Therefore, it had become imperative to ensure security of information systems for industries to survive and thrive. Bangalore, which exported $ 2.7 billion worth of software to the U.S., had to take note of this as security issues were becoming important.

The challenges had increased as there were so many Internet Service Providers and there was an explosive growth of wireless networking, among other things.

The Minister of State for Information Technology, D.B. Inamdar, who inaugurated the summit, said safeguarding information assets had become vital for corporates as well as society. Security breaches were being reported periodically and this called for sharing of information to create standards in security systems. He suggested that vendors should be made responsible for providing reliable products.

The Global Product Manager, BSI, U.K., Chris Ferrant, said that ISO 17799 had been designed as a risk management and business improvement tool to help protect and manage all critical business information.

The Vice-President, BSI, Asia, Robert P. Soden, welcomed the gathering and Vinod K. Jain, Managing Director, BSI, India, proposed a vote of thanks.
