J.S. Verma retires

NEW DELHI JAN. 17 . After more than two years of an eventful tenure as Chairman of National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Justice J.S.Verma demitted his office here today.

Verma, a former Chief Justice of India, took over as the Chief of NHRC on November 4, 2000.

During his tenure, he issued directives on crucial and important issues such as Gujarat, POTA and cases of fake encounters.

With Verma retiring, the five-member Commission is now left with only two members - Justice Sujata Manohar and Justice Virender Dayal.

The other two members retired early last year.
