The Chairman of the Legislative Council, B.L. Shankar, who inaugurated the festival, said: "There are a number of struggles for liberation and freedom, and fighting various forms of oppression. These struggles must continue. This festival is commendable as it marks an effort to create a space for artists and cultural activists to respond and associate with these struggles and people's movements." Anita Ratnam, danseuse and Director of Samvada, said social change was possible only when dominant cultures were challenged. Visual arts could take a cue from the literary world and respond to this need to subvert and create spaces for changes in the realms of culture.
