The ground was set, the hurdles placed and the atmosphere was live with enthusiasm. The function began with the mounted ride past and carrying of the Indian flag followed by the flags of the three forces -- Army, Navy and Air Force -- and the NCC. The two equestrian events, tent pegging and show jumping tested the skills, tactical manoeuvring and horsemanship of the cadets. In the tent pegging competition, the rider with a lance is tested on a marked track with prescribed speed to pick a peg placed on the ground. The aim is to carry the peg above ground for over 10 metres. The NCC has ten R&V units affiliated to veterinary colleges for providing equestrian training to cadets in addition to basic military training. The basic aim of the competition was to promote a sense of participation, equestrian skills and mastery in craftsmanship. The former Chief of the Army Staff, General Shankar Roy Choudhary, who was the Chief Guest, gave away the trophies and prizes to the winners. In his address, he emphasised on the qualities of courage, steadfastness and discipline, which are essential in a good rider. The NCC Horse Show and various other equestrian events are held every year to adjudge the best rider amongst boy and girl cadets of the Remount and Veterinary Units (R and V). The best rider competition at the all-India level was introduced in the year 1967.
