Youth festival: Ernakulam district ahead of others

By Our Staff Reporter

ALAPPUZHA JAN. 17. The close race for the coveted Golden Cup for overall champions continued on the third day of the 43rd State Schools Youth Festival being held here, with the Ernakulam, Kozhikode and Thrissur districts vying with each other on narrow margins.

When the results of 43 items were announced at 2-30 p.m. today, Ernakulam district was leading with 199 points, with Thrissur and Kozhikode following closely with 195 and 192 points respectively. Kannur and Thiruvananthapuram districts were trailing close behind with 187 and 184 points respectively.

The `Venice of East' wore a festive look as the narrow streets were thronged by thousands including the participating students, teachers, parents, officials and mediapersons. The large number of vehicles carrying participants from all over the State added to the traffic congestion.

Though the conduct of the festival was generally streamlined, confusion broke out at the Media Centre many times on Friday over the announcement of results and distribution of press releases.

In the absence of any filing system to ensure methodical distribution of handouts and results to newspapers and TV channels, the media committee members were constantly shuffling through sheaves of paper. Though a computer was installed at the Media centre, with even a Web site for the mega event, it served no purpose in speeding up work.

The programme committee office upstairs on the same building, at the same time, was crowded with participants arriving with special orders from the concerned DDEs and court orders. Even as the last item for a particular event was being performed, new participants kept arriving armed with special orders, said a programme committee official.

With about 140 students participating with the backing of appeals, the `Special Order Syndrome,' turned out to be the special feature for this festival. The Pathanamthitta and Kozhikode districts came highest in the number of appeals - 20 and 18 respectively.

Apart from the appeals sanctioned by the concerned DDEs, there were some 27 court orders including nine from the High Court.

This overflow of participants is upsetting the general schedule of the youth festival programmes. Even food and accommodation plans are affected, since the arrangements have been made as per the official list of participants.

About 18 appeals have been filed against the results announced so far.

Another major irritant in the smooth conduct of the events was the reluctance of the participants for dance items to perform in the first cluster, because of the general belief that initial performers will be given lower marks. But this belief was quite unfounded, noted some officials, since many prize winners had performed in the first cluster.
