Jan Shatabdi timings to be revised

By Our Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM Jan. 17. The arrival and departure timings of the newly introduced 2075/2076 Ernakulam-Thiruvananthapuram-Ernakulam Jan Shatabdi Express will be revised by the Southern Railway with effect from July, when the new railway timetable comes into effect.

Disclosing this at a press conference here today after unveiling the replica of the passenger travelling coach at the coaching maintenance depot here today, the Divisional Railway Manager, Dani Thomas, said the Jan Shatabdi Express will depart from Thiruvananthapuram Central at 6-10 a.m. instead of 5-50 a.m.

Although the railways want to revise the departure timings of the daily train from Ernakulam from the present 5-15 p.m. to 7- 15 p.m., a survey carried out among the commuters recently had found that they were not in favour of it. Mr. Thomas said the train had to be stopped at several station for crossings while returning from Ernakulam junction to Thiruvananthapuram Central.

``As the stops for Jan Shatabdi are limited, the train can be operated between Thiruvananthapuram central and Ernakulam junction in three-and-a-half hours,'' the DRM said.

Pointing out that the AC chair coaches of Jan Shatabdi have a occupancy of 47 per cent while the Second Class coaches have only 35 per cent, Mr. Thomas said the high rates compared to the other express trains was the main reason for the low response.

The Divisional Railway Manager said the commuters from the State capital can reach Chennai in 13 hours with the extension of the Guruvayur-Madurai train to Chennai Egmore from January 18. The train is being extended by coupling the Madurai-Guruvayur Express and the Madurai-Chennai Egmore Kudalur Express.

Mr. Thomas said the 6127/6128 will depart from Chennai Egmore every day at 7 a.m. to reach Guruvayur the next day at 4.45 a.m. In the return direction, the daily train will depart from Guruvayur at 9-15 p.m.to reach Thiruvananthapuram Central the next day at 4-15 a.m, and Chennai Egmore at 8-30 p.m.

With the extension of the Madurai-Guruvayur Express to Chennai Egmore, the long pending demand of the commuters from the State capital for a day train to Chennai had been fulfilled.

The total revenue earnings of the railway division has come down from Rs. 467 crores in 2001 to Rs. 431 crores in 2002. The division's earnings from goods traffic had come down from 60 per cent in 2001 to 45 per cent in 2002. The earnings from the passenger traffic had gone up from 40 per cent in 2001 to 55 per cent during the last year, Mr. Thomas said.
