Mr. Veeramani criticised the Union Law Ministry for delaying appointment, even though the names of nine judges were cleared by the Madras High Court, and said it resulted in accumulation of cases. Though the party was opposed to court boycott by lawyers, the one conducted to highlight the need to fill the vacancies was not unwarranted, he said in a release today. The delay adversely affected the interests of the litigant-public, advocates and judicial officers alike, he said, adding that social justice was the biggest casualty in the matter. Mr. Veeramani also expressed concern over the lack of adequate representation of women and Dalit members in the judiciary, and called for improvement of the existing ratio. Taking into consideration that 11 posts were already vacant in the Madras High Court, and also the fact that six more posts were to fall vacant this year, the Government should make efforts to fill the vacancies as early as possible, he said.
