VHP charge against U.S. missionary

By Our Staff Reporter

KOCHI JAN. 17. The Vishwa Hindu Parishad leader, Kummanam Rajasekharan, has called for the arrest of Joseph Cooper, the American missionary (who was recently attacked at Kilimanoor, near Tiruvananthapuram, allegedly by RSS activists) for "evangelising" on a visiting visa.

Claiming that the RSS had no role in the attack, Mr. Rajasekharan said the 1956 Foreigners Act did not allow those on visiting visa to propagate their religion.

Mr. Cooper had not only evangelised but also sought to "denigrate" the Hindu dharma and culture in his speech. He had also proselytised "impoverished Hindus" and tried to disturb communal harmony, Mr. Rajasekharan alleged. Pastor Benson, who was also injured in the attack, was involved in a sexual harassment case at Sreekaryam, he alleged.
