Ex-SHO suspended for custodial death

By Shujaat Bukhari

JAMMU JAN. 17. The Jammu and Kashmir Government today placed under suspension Gazanfar Ali, former Station House Officer of the Nowgam police station, for his involvement in the custodial death of a mason, Abdul Majid Wani, of Mouchwa locality soon after Mufti Mohammad Sayeed took over as Chief Minister.

The death led to strong protests in the area and came as an embarrassment for the Mufti, as the police station stands yards away from his residence. The Government immediately removed the SHO and attached him to the District Police Lines. A magisterial inquiry was ordered.

Sources said the inquiry report said that the SHO was involved in the Wani's killing, who was tortured in custody, and has belied the police theory that he tried to commit suicide.
