dated January 18, 1953: Neguib and democracy

From the Editorials: "General Neguib in Egypt enjoys great popular support and seems sincerely to want to restore democracy. But he feels compelled to curb freedom of expression and association, and soon it may not be possible at all to restore democratic practices. Further, the people are likely to become restive unless they see their economic position quickly improved. The General's ideal is said to be Kamal Ataturk, and Neguib must bear in mind how that leader successfully brought about Turkey's democratic system."
