Speaking to The Hindu, the Rajya Sabha member, H.K. Javare Gowda, said the Government had failed to convince the Prime Minister of the ground realities and created a bad precedent. He said the Government had decided to release water under pressure from the Union Government and in view of the likely stand of the court. Earlier, when water was released, farmers suffered. Now, the rest of the people would face a drinking water crisis, he added. He said the Union ministers from Karnataka and the BJP President, M. Venkaiah Naidu, who got elected to the Rajya Sabha from Karnataka, had failed to convince the Prime Minister of the ground realities. They used the opportunity to gain political advantage, he added. B.V. Kari Gowda, MLC, said that when farmers in the State were facing a water crisis due to the failure of the monsoon, the Government was eager to help farmers in a neighbouring State. That showed that the Congress Government was succumbing to pressure from the Union Government. Farmers in Hassan District were in distress as the monsoon had failed this year. Without taking into account the plight of farmers, the Government had take a decision, he added. He said the State Government should have impressed upon the Centre the need to send a team to study the availability of water in the State reservoirs and the viability of releasing it. He apprehended that the people of Hassan District might face an acute shortage of drinking water due to the decision of the Government. The Sakleshpur-Alur MLA, B.B. Shivappa, who identifies himself with Congress, questioned the Government's decision to release water. He said that if the Government continued to release water to Tamil Nadu, farmers in the Cauvery Basin would have to face the consequences. Mr. Krishna, who represents Mandya District, was well aware of the repercussion of the release of water to Tamil Nadu, and he (Mr. Shivappa) could not understand as what prompted Mr. Krishna to agree to release water, he added. The President of Hassan District unit of the Krishik Samaj, H.S. Puttaswamy, said the decision would affect farmers in the Hemavathi Basin, as the district administration had directed them not to grow any more crops. He urged the Government to compensate farmers who could not cultivate an area of two lakh acres in the Hemavathi Basin. He alleged that the district administration had cautioned the farmers that their pumpsets would be seized for non-compliance of the direction.
