U.N. post for Kiran Bedi

NEW DELHI JAN. 11. The senior IPS officer, Kiran Bedi, has become the first woman and also the first Indian to be appointed to the prestigious post of United Nations Civilian Police Adviser.

Ms. Bedi, who is the first woman Indian Police Service officer, is at present serving as Special Commissioner (Intelligence), Delhi police. She has been appointed by the U.N. Secretary-General, Kofi Annan, to work with the Department of Peacekeeping Operations. She would take over from acting Adviser, Antero Lopes of Portugal.

In her reaction here today, Ms. Bedi, a recipient of the Ramon Magsaysay award for government service, said: "I am both grateful and delighted and look forward to greater learning''. — UNI
