Form farmers movement to oppose WTO directives: AICCTU

By Our Staff Reporter

Pondicherry Jan. 11. The two-day national council meeting of the all India Central Council of Trade Unions (AICCTU) which concluded here today expressed concern at recent suicide by farmers in Tamil Nadu and similar attempt by farmers in Andhra Pradesh, Punjab, Maharashtra and Haryana.

Addressing presspersons today the working president of the Council, S.Kumaraswamy and its General Secretary, S. Mukerji said that the suicide by farmers was a direct fallout of the dictates of the World Trade Organisation and wanted the agriculturists in the country to launch strong united movement to resist the dictates.

Mr. Mukerji said that the delegates at the meeting also urged the working class in the country to make the proposed march to the Parliament scheduled by the working class in Delhi on February 26, a successful event.

A nationwide campaign would be launched to mobilise the support of the workers for the march.

The stir was aimed at protesting the BJP-led NDA Government's policy of `surrender to US imperalism' and `communal fascist offensive' to divide the working class.

The meeting also objected to the globalisation policy and also to move to dismantle the profit-making public sector undertakings and also strategic industries like the oil companies.

Mr. Kumarasamy said that the AICCTU council would urge the authorities to bring in a comprehensive legislation for welfare of the agrarian workers and also to benefit the workers in unorganised sector.

He said that the Cauvery water dispute should be tackled without giving room for any confrontation and said that the rural economy which was being crushed now should be saved by proper perspective plan.

The vice president of the council, S. Balasubramanian said that 65 delegates from all over the country participated in the meeting.
