Tamil Nadu

Addressing a Dalit-Hindu unity festival in support of the Tamil Nadu Prevention of Forcible Conversions Act, organised by the Adi Dravidar Community Panchayat Federation here on Saturday, the Acharya said all were children of God, and none was untouchable. A society in which all people lived in unity had been in existence from time immemorial. "But several people with a political background are trying to divide us", he said. The Acharya said politicians had kept the Dalits out of the echelons of power and they appeased the Dalits only during elections. The Sankara Mutt had been helping the Dalits from the time of the Paramacharya, who used to provide them dhoties during his travel through the length and breadth of the country. The Mutt also offered employment to many people in villages. The Dalits from 5,000 villages were being given bhajan articles from the Mutt. All Hindus, including the Dalits, were allowed inside and treated equally in Siva temples. The Acharya appealed to the people to confine themselves to their religions and not to criticise other religions. "Love your religion, but do not hate other religions". If everyone followed this policy, all people would be happy. J. Parthibhan, all-India general secretary of the Dalit Sena, who presided, said the Dalits were not born to embrace other religions. "The Dalits are not for sale", he said. It was the politicians who all the time were trying to exploit the Dalits for their selfish ends, he said.
