Police deny conversion bid in college

By Our Staff Correspondent

RAIPUR JAN. 11. There was panic at the Government Degree Girls' College here today following reports that a student became unconscious after four "Christian'' women gave her sermons on Christianity. The incident was given a political colour with the Bharatiya Janata Party claiming that it was an attempt at forced conversion, but the police dismissed the allegations.

According to the police, the four women were frequent visitors to the college and friendly with the student, Madhuri Bek (25), a M.H.Sc (Previous) student and a native of Ambikapur, who stayed in the hostel. The visitors, who claimed to be social workers, have been identified as Vimla Rao, Bobby Israel, Trishila Israel, all from Lucknow and Anjelina Jackson Masiha, a native of Gorakhpur

The visitors and Madhuri were reportedly discussing Christianity in the college premises this afternoon and the conversation was overheard by two staff members who took exception to the discussion and even threatened Madhuri with disciplinary action. Hearing this, Madhuri reportedly fell unconscious, following which she was shifted to a nursing home.
