Rallies mark conclusion of Janmabhoomi

By Our Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD JAN. 11. The 18th round of Janmabhoomi came to a close on the 10th day today, culminating in rallies allover the State, and participated on the last day also by the Chief Minister, N. Chandrababu Naidu, in Nellore and Chittoor districts.

The achievement, according to reports reaching the State monitoring cell in the Planning Department here, was that assets and benefits worth Rs. 111.63 crores were distributed till yesterday to 15.28 lakh weaker section beneficiaries whose welfare was the theme selected for this round. Nearly 8 lakh representations were received at grama sabhas relating to individual family needs and non-financial community needs.

The Government has fixed May 31 as the deadline for settling all these problems as per the type of Citizens' Charter adopted for Janmabhoomi. Disposal of petitions will be monitored case-wise on APONLINE. Public contributions, cash or kind, will be received up to January 31 against the works marked during the round.

The Planning Secretary, A. K. Parida, who heads the cell, described the response this time as "overwhelming,'' and said the boycotts or disturbances were at their lowest level and this showed that the programme had caught the imagination of people. There was no problem from naxalites except in Guntur district where officials were kidnapped and released. Public response was nil or low in eight to nine mandals in the district due to fear of extremists.

The participation in the urban areas was 50 per cent and in villages it was about 60 per cent. By Friday, a record number of 23,961 gram sabhas were held by 1,256 mandal/municipal teams against a target of 24,364. The participation by elected representatives was "encouraging,'' including those belonging to Opposition parties, the official said. The Chief Minister took the lead, by participating in programmes in 14 districts, making visits everyday.

The other achievements were: conduct of 26,552 veterinary camps at which 88.59 lakh animals were treated and 137.98 lakh sheep dewormed and 18.11 lakh farmers assisted; 12,952 health camps at which 10.31 lakh patients were treated; 4,715 special camps for women and; 13,114 AIDS awareness camps.
