Girl killed in encounter

By Our Correspondent

IMPHAL JAN. 11. A 10-year-old girl was killed and her father and a Border Security Force personnel, were wounded last night in an encounter at Nighthoukhong in Bishnupur District even as a fierce exchange of fire between the BSF and insurgents of the Manipur People's Liberation Front (MPLF) continued for the fourth day today at Sajik Tampak in Chandel district.

P.K. Mishra, DIG, BSF, said that at least two battalions of the force had been rushed to Sajik Tampak and helicopters requisitioned to nab the "fleeing" insurgents. At least one assistant commandant and three personnel have been killed.

Suspected MPLF cadres reportedly attacked a BSF convoy last night near Keinou in Bishnpur District. When the BSF personnel returned the fire, stray bullets hit the house of R.K. Ajitkumar at Ningthoukhong market. Though he escaped, his daughter, R.K. Thoinaobi, was hit in the head. She succumbed to the bullet injuries on way to hospital.
