Indians to the fore

By S. Sabanayakan

JAMSHEDPUR JAN. 11. Indians were to the fore occupying eight out of the first ten positions in the boys' section and six out of ten places in the girls' category of the single FITA round of the first Asian junior archery championship at the JRD Tata Sports Complex here on Saturday.

The day's outstanding performance came from a 15-year-old Guwahati lad Jayanta Talukdar. He accumulated 1292 points, a score not too many Indian senior archers could get regularly.

Talukdar stood first in the 50m and 30m competitions and was second in the 90m and 70m distances on a pleasant sunny day with cross breeze blowing across the field providing an element of uncertainty.

International Bansaralin Dhar, originally from Shillong and another TAA product, took the first place in the girls' section with a total of 1276 points.

She stood first in the 70m (317) and 30m (340). She ended third in the 60m (313) and second in the 50m (306). Team captain Keziengunuo Theunuo was second overall with a total of 1255.

Basing the performance of the single FITA round, the pairing for the Olympic round competition, to be held on Sunday, would be made with first position holder meeting the sixteenth place finisher.

The Olympic round competition is a knockout round where the nerve will play a big role in coming through the contest.

The last two finishers in the boys' category and the last three in the girls' group were automatically eliminated.
