Meet on developmental disabilities

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM Jan. 1. A three-day national conference for professionals in Disability Research and Action, organised by the India Centre for Social Change (ICSC), begins here at the Vyloppilli Samskrithi Bhavan on Thursday.

The Minister for Forests, K. Sudhakaran, will inaugurate the conference, and the Minister for Rural Development, C. F. Thomas, will preside. Bishop Joshua Mar Ignathios, V.S. Sivakumar, MP, and Sugathakumari, among others, will participate.

The three-day disability conference for professionals who work with people of disabilities will focus on the plight of 24 million people with mental retardation and 7.5 million with mental illnesses in the country.

One of the major goals of the conference would be to provide a comprehensive support system and ensure a better quality of life for people with mental retardation and mental illness, especially children, the office-bearers of ICSC, Fr. George Mathew Nalunnakkal and Fr. Kuriakose Moolayil, said at a press conference here on Wednesday.
