Parking space owners put on notice

By Suresh Krishnamoorthy

HYDERABAD Jan. 1. The Municipal Corporation of Hyderabad (MCH) will soon serve notices on people in all private and commercial complexes, asking them to stop collecting parking fee on the ground that they are ``bound to provide parking as per the approved plan.''

The MCH Commissioner, Chitra Ramachandran, said that while the parking ticket system had been introduced and a good beginning made, they were in the process of tackling step by step the problem of unscrupulous operators ``fleecing the public'' in the name of parking fee.

MCH officials are, however, ``extremely pleased with the good beginning that is made with the launch of the sale of tickets in all the e-Seva centres in the twin cities." The e-Seva Director, Phani Kumar, said the 26 e-Seva centres sold 373 parking tickets of various denominations on Wednesday and netted Rs. 56,800.

However, there were teething problems as the e-Seva centres could only issue a receipt for the money received and not the actual laminated card. Thanks to a technical problem, all those who had paid money for a parking ticket were asked to come back 24 hours later to collect their laminated parking tickets with the vehicle numbers imprinted on them.

In a sudden move, the price of a parking ticket for four-wheelers, which had been earlier proposed at Rs. 300 by the Standing Committee, was reduced to Rs. 200 and approved by the Council. All transactions carry a charge of Rs. 20. The parking tickets are valid in all the 160-odd municipal parking lots in the twin cities.

Talk of the officialdom thus far, claiming to clamp down on private operators who collected money and issued parking tickets, remained tall with attendants in several parking lots continuing to collect money on Wednesday in scant disregard of official orders.
