The incident came to light when the parents of the victim woke up late in the morning and found her missing. They searched the area, but could not trace her. Later, they realised that some jewellery and cash kept in the house were also missing, suggesting that she took them with her. The victim's father, Altaf Hussain (name changed), who sells leather products in Himachal Pradesh, was in the house when his daughter went missing. "She probably mixed some sedatives in our food in the night, owing to which we woke up late,'' he said. Altaf asked the other area residents whether they had seen her. "Some people told me that a day before she went missing, they had noticed some suspicious vehicles near the house,'' he added. In a complaint to the police, he named some persons from whom information about his daughter's whereabouts could be gathered. He also named the person who kidnapped his daughter. However, he alleged that the police registered a case of kidnapping in this regard after two days. Altaf claimed that the relatives of the accused were trying to convince the investigating officer that the girl went along with him at the instance of her mother, which was not true. He said while the accused was missing with his daughter, his elder brother too had gone into hiding.
