Cow slaughter sparks tension in Jammu

Jammu Jan. 1. Tension gripped Jammu in the wake of reports of a cow slaughter.

Shopkeepers downed their shutters and demonstrations were staged in the old city following reports that a cow was slaughtered by some unidentified persons at the residence of a prominent person in Jhullaka Mohalla, official sources told PTI.

Additional police forces were deployed in the area as a precautionary measure, the sources said.

Police seized the carcass and registered a case.

They also blocked all roads leading to a place of worship in Jhullaka Mohalla.

Militants shot dead a Central Reserve Police Force jawan and critically injured a Border Security Force personnel in separate attacks in Srinagar, official sources said.

Constable Surjeet Singh of the 31st battalion of the CRPF was shot dead with a pistol by unidentified militants in Khanyar locality.

In a major haul on the first day of the new year, security forces recovered a huge cache of arms and ammunition at Trehgam in Kupwara district, a Defence spokesman said.

The seizure included 271 kg RDX, 71 hand grenades, 57 UBGL grenades, 24 RPGs, three AK 57 rifles, two pistols, three wireless sets, one disposable rocket launcher and several assorted magazines.
