Transport Dept. to form enforcement cells

HYDERABAD Jan. 1. The Transport Department is set to form new Enforcement Cells in all the districts in a bid to check illegal operations. The move is expected to generate additional revenue to the Government, said the Minister for Transport, M. Damodar Reddy.He said that in 2003, officials would strive to improve services with a greater deal of transparency. The department had achieved a growth rate of 30 per cent of the target at the end of the third quarter this year, as compared to the corresponding period in 2001-2002. Mr. Damodar Reddy inaugurated a swank, new indoor stadium in the premises of the Khairatabad office of the Regional Transport Authority. He also released a calendar depicting the infrastructure acquired by the department and steps taken to bring in transparency all over the State.

The Minister said that the focus areas this year would be enforcement and putting in place measures to check pollution. All the District Collectors had been asked to concentrate on forming task forces for pollution checks and monitoring performance, he said. Banks would be asked to extend loans to unemployed graduates with the Government standing guarantee to help them set up computerised pollution testing centres in the districts.

The Transport Commissioner, A. Giridhar, had released a grant of Rs. 2 lakhs for construction of the stadium. Among others present were the Additional Commissioner, V. Malyadri, Joint Transport Commissioners, C.L.N. Gandhi, T. Krishna Reddy and C. Subba Rao.
