'No polio virus in goats in Tamil Nadu'

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI Jan. 1. The Centre today denied reports that scientists had found evidence suggesting the presence of polio virus in some goats in a village in Tamil Nadu following the outbreak of an epidemic, in which about 200 goats died during January-March last year.

In a press release, the Union Health Ministry said that what was found was only some polio-like antibodies and they could have been due to cross reaction with some other viruses.

A total of nine serum samples and one brain specimen were tested.

While no antibodies for the polio virus were isolated, polio-like antibodies were detected in four of the samples.Further studies were on to detect the virus that caused them, it added.
