Pondy art festival from January 12

CHENNAI JAN. 1 . Seventeen well-known painters and sculptors will assemble in Pondicherry, which is hosting a weeklong "Artma Kala Arts Festival-2003" from January 12, according to P. Mathew Samuel, managing director of the Union Territory Tourism and Transport Development Corporation.

Organised by the Pondicherry Department of Tourism in colloboration with the Lalit Kala Akademi, regional centre, Chennai, the South Zone Cultural Centre, Thanjavur, and the Aurodhan Art Gallery, Pondicherry, the event will provide an impetus to the efforts at promoting Pondicherry as a tourist destination with its combination of French culture and Indian spirituality.

Among the participating painters and sculptors are: Aditya Basak and Kazi Nazir (Kolkata), Ajay Kumar (Thiruvananthapuram), Anne Pia (Sweden), Anu Naik, Niren Sengupta and Sudeep Roy (New Delhi), Aziz and Laxma Goud (Hyderabad), Deepak Shinde and Vijay Shinde (Pune), Rajasekhar Nair and Viswam A (Chennai), Ramesh V (Visakhapatnam), Suresh Choudhary (Bhopal) and Walter D'Souza (Goa).
