TVS Motor's sales up 21 p.c. in Dec.

NEW DELHI JAN. 1. TVS Motor Company's sales of two-wheelers rose by 21 per cent during December to 88,682 units from 73,259 units in the same month last year.

Motorcycle sales jumped by 38 per cent to 59,619 units from 43,220 units last year with the 110cc model `Victor' crossing the three lakh sales mark during the month.

In scooters, sales increased by 6 per cent to 8,949 units while in mopeds, the company maintained a flat growth at 20,114 units, according to a company release.

In the first nine months of this fiscal, sales surged by 36 per cent to 8.45 lakh units from 6.20 lakh units a year earlier. It attributed the growth to good motorcycle sales, primarily the Victor model.

Sales of motorcycles during April-December soared by 79 per cent to 5.40 lakh units from 3.03 lakh units. In the ungeared scooter segment, the company sold 1.21 lakh units during April-December, a modest 4 per cent rise against 1.17 lakh units last year. In mopeds, sales fell by 8.5 per cent year-on-year to 1.84 lakh units from 2.01 lakh units.

In the third quarter of this fiscal, the company recorded a 23 per cent rise at 2.88 lakh units against 2.34 lakh units.

Bajaj Auto

Bajaj Auto has recorded a 10.6 per cent increase in motorcycle sales at 68,998 units in December against 62,385 units sold in the same period last year.

Total two-wheeler sales, however, declined by 1.2 per cent to 98,025 units from 99,232 units in December 2001 while that of three wheelers rose by 28.1 per cent to 15,555 units from 12,143 units, the company said in a release.

Exports increased to 8,114 units, up 84 per cent, it added. During April-December, motorcycle sales rose by 39.4 per cent to 6.42 lakh units from 4.61 lakh units.

Hero Honda

Hero Honda Motors reported a marginal rise in sales during December to 1.23 lakh units from 1.22 lakh units in the same month last year.

Cumulative (April-December 2002) sales rose by 24 per cent to 12.64 lakh units from 10.17 lakh units a year earlier, the company said.

Exports have spurted to 2,268 units in the review month from 898 units in December 2001 while shipments during the first nine months went up by 80 per cent to 17,125 units from 9,477 units last year.
