NC against giving more powers to Ladakh Hill Council

By Shujaat Bukhari

JAMMU JAN. 1. The National Conference, main opposition party in Jammu and Kashmir, has decried the decision of the coalition Government in the State to delegate powers to the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC) saying it has not evolved a consensus on such a "sensitive issue''.

In a statement, Mohiuddin Shah, leader of the NC in the Legislative Assembly, said "the manner in which the decision has been taken runs counter to established norms of parliamentary practice''.

This approach smacked of political opportunism, he alleged adding "while giving more powers of the LAHDC, the Government should have ensured the withdrawal of the demand for Union Territory status by the Ladakh Union Territory Front''. Also, the Front should have been dissolved.
