This Day That Age
Presiding over the Sadas of the Madras Music Academy in the Sundareswarar Hall in Mylapore, Mr. Kasturi Srinivasan observed, "The musician's is a noble profession. Musicians should help organisations like the Music Academy to devise measures to maintain standards and preserve our ancient heritage. The Academy has succeeded in substantial measure in persuading artistes to pay attention to sampradaya in their performances, but public support for attempts to restore standards has been lukewarm.." The title and insignia of Sangita Kalanidhi were conferred on the President of the year, Veena Vidwan Sri Karaikudi Sambasiva Aiyar. Souvenirs were presented to honour Sri Bharatam Narayanaswami Aiyar, Sri Papanasam Sivan, Sri Ramaniah Chetti and Srimathi Jayammal. The Sadas was attended by a distinguished gathering including Mr. M. Patanjali Sastri, Chief Justice of India, Mr. C. Rajagopalachari, Chief Minister, and Sir C. P. Ramaswami Aiyar. It commenced with an invocation to the Goddess of Learning by Srimathi D. K. Pattammal who sang Muthuswami Dikshitar's "Sri Saraswathi Namosthte" in Arabhi. Sangita Kalanidhi T. V. Subba Rao, Vice-President of the Academy, said in his welcome address that in Mr. Kasturi Srinivasan they had a well known personage who was not only the Editor of a great newspaper of the world, but also a music lover of high taste and critical judgment. He was a supporter of good causes and his services to promote Carnatic music, and to the Music Academy in particular, were unforgettable.
