Rediscover identity, CJP tells Cong.

By Our Staff Reporter

COIMBATORE Dec. 21. The Congress in the State should rediscover its true identity and work to form a third front, for providing an alternative to the DMK and the AIADMK, the Congress Jananayaga Peravai leader, P. Chidambaram, said here today.

The Congress was suffering for lack of self-confidence and that was why it had watched the DMK and AIADMK forming their governments alternatively, in spite of its being a national party.

It was time the party believed in itself and strove to form a third front and the CJP would offer its ``full co-operation'' to the Congress in doing so.

``It is heartening to note now that the Congress and the Left parties have begun to express in favour of the front."

Welcoming the CPI State secretary, R. Nallakkannu's call for the front, he said that in course of time, "we can see all non-DMK and AIADMK parties veering around to this view."

Mr. Chidambaram clarified that he did not mean that the two parties should never return to power again. An alternative front should rule the State for at least five years so that the people would know the difference between the regimes.

He faulted the regimes of both the Dravidian parties for not having practised austerity. ``Neither do they have any talent for innovation.''

On whether there were signs of the front taking shape, he said the situation now indicated of a movement in that direction and expressed the confidence that it would be formed by 2006.

Earlier, he had a `face-to-face' session with students of the GRD School of Commerce and International Business.
