Mr.Gopalswami, who was in Chennai to attend a private function, held discussions with State DGP, B.P.Nailwal, and State Home Secretary, Syed Munir Hoda, about the strategies to contain the menace. During the discussions, Mr.Gopalswami emphasised the need for stepping up development schemes in the district to address the local problems. Later, in a brief chat with reporters, he said the Centre would provide all assistance to the State in stamping out naxalism, he added. He said he suggested special focus be laid on speedy implementation of the existing rural development schemes and primary education projects such as the Sarva Siksha Abiyan. Also, a nodal officer for implementing the projects could be appointed for the district, Mr.Gopalswami said. On the nationwide security alert issued to the States by the Centre, Mr.Gopalswami said it was a "routine" alert ahead of the anniversary of the Babri masjid demolition. "There is nothing specific about the alert." On the Centre's stand on the MDMK leader, Vaiko's petition challenging the provisions of the Prevention of Terrorism Act, he said, the Union Government was yet to decide on the issue. As for the Tamil Nadu Bill seeking an amendment to the Criminal Procedure Code to enable extension of remand for undertrials from the present 15 to 30 days, he said an appropriate decision would be taken when the matter came up for the Centre's consideration.
