Bhargavi's expulsion endorsed

Thiruvananthapuram Dec. 1. The expulsion of the CPI leader and former Deputy Speaker of the State Assembly, Bhargavi Thankappan, from the party has been recommended by the party district committee for having allegedly received payoffs from the liquor baron, Manichan, an accused in the Kalluvathukkal-Pallickal liquor tragedy which claimed 36 lives.

The CPI district council this morning formally endorsed the decision of the party's executive committee taken last night to expel her from the party, especially in the context of her name figuring in the interim report of the Mohankumar Commission, probing the tragedy, along with two other CPI(M) leaders as having received grease money from Manichan.

Since Ms. Thankappan is a member of the Thiruvananthapuram district executive, the decision of the district council would have to be ratified by the CPI State executive, party sources said.
