The campus and affiliated colleges were closed indefinitely on November 22 by the Vice-Chancellor, Y.C. Simhadri, after the students went on an agitation to press for their demands. The Chief Minister, N. Chandrababu Naidu, during his visit to north Andhra late last week had directed the Vice-Chancellor on Friday to reopen the campus and other colleges immediately. In a one-line circular signed by the principals of all four campus colleges, it was stated that the university campus colleges, PG Centre-Kakinada and PG Centre-Etherla in Srikakulam, would be reopened on Tuesday. Despite the announcement to reopen the colleges, the AU Students' Protection Committee continued its relay hunger strike in front of the RTC complex for the third consecutive day on Sunday. A spokesman for the committee said they would continue their agitation till the Government conceded their demand for recall of the Vice-Chancellor and withdrawal of all the `undemocratic' circulars issued by the authorities.
