Why CPI(M) joined the J&K coordination panel

By K.V. Prasad

NEW DELHI DEC. 1. The recent decision of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) to be part of a coordination committee in Jammu and Kashmir instead of joining the Mufti Mohammed Sayeed Government was on anticipated lines.

Yet, the issue, which forced the party to take a look at the State unit's suggestion to be in the Government, once again put the focus on the CPI (M)'s approach in such matters. Though a parallel cannot be drawn with the 1996 decision to stay away from heading the United Front Government at the Centre, the party had to take into consideration ideological compulsions and the special position Jammu and Kashmir has in the country's polity.

The politburo gave the nod to the decision to allow its State unit to be on the committee, and the Central Committee endorsed it during the third week of last month.

The J&K CPI (M) secretary, Mohammed Yusuf Tarigami, who was elected to the Assembly, favoured joining the coalition. Among the arguments advanced was that it would provide the CPI (M) an opportunity to consolidate its position.
