Abu Abraham passes away

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM DEC. 1. Political cartoonist and journalist, Abu Abraham, died at a private hospital here today. He was 78 and is survived by his wife and two children.

Born in Thiruvalla in 1924, Mr. Abraham worked as a reporter in The Bombay Chronicle for three years and then in Shankar's Weekly.

Then, he went to London where he worked with The Tribune, The Observer (1956-66) and The Guardian (1966-69). After returning to India, he joined the Indian Express, New Delhi, where he worked till 1981. He was nominated to the Rajya Sabha in 1972.

Mr. Abraham's cartoons and articles have appeared in leading newspapers in India and abroad. The cartoons have stood apart for their simplicity of lines and directness of expression.

In an interview to The Hindu in 1997, he said: "I wish I could draw like a child. If I can adopt that kind of a style for political cartoons, it would be a great achievement. It is very difficult to get that kind of simplicity and appeal".
