Skulls seized from self-styled godmen at Vengilikanapalli near Krishnagiri, on Sunday.
Following complaints from villagers about the `godmen', the police raided a tent in a mango grove and found them performing poojas to a six-ft-tall Rudramurthy idol with a skull in its hand and 108 skulls kept buried around it. The `godmen' claimed that the poojas were performed to cure handicapped persons and leprosy patients. Most of the skulls were obtained from Salem and Omalur graveyards. But as they were unable to obtain all the 108 skulls required for the poojas, some of them were purchased at the rate of Rs.20 a piece from graveyards around Krishnagiri. The police have so far secured seven persons, including the land owner Sivakumar (34) of Periamuthur, who organised the poojas, Palaniswamy (37) of Thiruthani, Natarajan (49) and Mohan (40) of Omalur, Murugessan (27) of Chinnamuthur, Mani (38) of Thonnayakottai and Ramalingam (36) of Salem. Two cell phones, gas lighters, torch lights, a deer skin and a diary carrying numbers of certain VIPs were secured from the tent. The SP, K. Periaiah, visited the grove and held enquiries. The Krishnagiri taluk police have registered a case.
