Letters to the Editor
Sir, The Tamil Nadu Government recently notified the public holidays for 2003 (Nov. 29). Usually, the holidays are declared under the Negotiable Instruments Act and will be applicable to banks also. This year it is not stated so. Will there be a separate list for banks? There are 22 holidays declared out of which three fall on Sundays and one on Saturday. In January, government offices will work only for two days during the period of nine days, i.e., 11 to 19. Similarly, in April, government offices will work only for two days during the span of nine days, i.e., 12 to 20. Only Tamil Nadu celebrates three New Year's Days - January 1, April 2 and 14 for the purpose of holiday. Taking into account the casual leave, privilege (earned) leave and sick leave eligible, the government employees in a year will work for less than 182 days, i.e., 50 per cent. It is no wonder why our country is still far behind other developing countries. R. Balasubramaniam, Chennai
