Resume STF operations, BJP urges Govt.

By Our Staff Correspondent

GULBARGA Nov. 30. The BJP State unit today demanded that the State Government resume the Special Task Force (STF) operations against the forest brigand, Veerappan, without waiting for the release of the former minister, H.Nagappa.

Basavaraj Patil Sedam, BJP State unit President, told presspersons that the party had no role in the decision of the Government to suspend the operations against Veerappan. "The Government has not consulted the Opposition parties before suspending operations against Veerappan or asking the STF personnel to return to barracks."

However, Mr. Sedam could not explain why the party remained silent all these days. Asked whether the resumption of operations would not endanger the life of Mr. Nagappa, the BJP leader said the Government could ensure the safe release of Mr. Nagappa even after resuming the operations against Veerappan. He said that everybody should be prepared to make sacrifices and pointed out that in the operations against terrorists many security personnel had sacrificed their life.

He said the motive of the Government should be to adopt a fight-to-the-finish approach in dealing with Veerappan. If the Government had acted firmly against the brigand immediately after the release of the Kannada thespian, Rajkumar, the present situation could have been avoided.

Mr. Sedam said the BJP had cooperated with the Government in getting timely assistance from the Centre in the form of men and material to assist the STF in its operation against Veerappan and even a helicopter equipped with modern gadgets was lent to Karnataka. But the State Government chose to return the Central forces and the machinery within a week.

Accusing the Chief Minister, S.M.Krishna, and his ministers of having links with Veerappan, the BJP leader said the all-revealing book written by the former DGP, C.Dinakar, laid bare details of the discussions the Chief Minister had with the criminal. He demanded the dismissal of the State Government and a high-level probe into the revelations made in the book.

Addressing party workers at a protest rally here where an effigy of the Chief Minister was burnt, Mr. Sedam lambasted the Congress Government for clinging to power and levelling baseless allegations against Mr Dinakar. Mr. Sedam said Mr. Krishna had no moral right to continue in power and should have resigned soon after the book was published.

Demanding the dismissal of the State Government and an inquiry into the revelations made in the book, he said the BJP had chalked out a programme, including holding public rallies in Hubli, Belgaum, Davanagere, Mysore this month, and a public meeting in Bangalore in the last week of December. He said an emergency meeting of the office-bearers of the State unit of the party, legislators, and presidents of the district units had been convened in Bangalore on December 27 to discuss the emerging situation after the release of Mr. Dinakar's book.

Earlier, Mr. Sedam and senior party workers, including the former Chairman of the Gulbarga Development Authority, Shyamrao Pyati, the party's Rural District unit President, Mahantgowda Patil, the city unit President, Chandrasekhar Patil Ravoor, and the General Secretary, Arvind Guruji, led a procession from Super Market area to the Vallabhbhai Patel Chowk.
