Agitators unleash reign of terror in city

By Our Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM Nov. 27. A section of the headload workers, affiliated to the CITU, AITUC, UTUC and BMS, who came to lay siege to the Government Secretariat today unleashed a reign of terror by scaring away office-goers, including women, who came to attend the office and hurling abuses on pedestrians.

A cameraman of the Jeevan TV, K. P. Sajan, was injured in the assault near the Press Club while he was returning after covering the inauguration of the strike by the Leader of the Opposition, V. S. Achuthanandan. He was hospitalised. His left elbow was fractured.

Even the presspersons, who came to report the agitation and those who came to Press Club for covering the press conferences were not spared by the agitationists. Students of the Journalism Institute and presspersons were stranded in the Press Club for hours as the volunteers did not allow them to move out of the building.

The headload workers also turned their ire at the Press Club on spotting the camera of a satellite Malayalam channel which was interviewing those who came for a press conference. Stones and bottles were thrown at the building damaging the glass panes of the hall on the first floor, where press conferences are held.

The volunteers, especially those of CITU, ganged up at main junctions and blockaded pedestrians who tried to proceed to the Secretariat and other offices located in its vicinity. For several hours, the Spencer junction to Pulimoodu, Bakery junction-Vanross junction-Jacob's junction-Cantonment police station, Press Club-Cantonment police station and YMCA-Press Club stretch remained out of bounds to pedestrians and motorists.

The office-goers and students, who ventured to proceed ahead through the road from VJT Hall and Statue ignoring the warning of the volunteers were abused, threatened and even beaten up near the Spencer junction. Ropes were tied near the mouth of all roads at the Spencer's junction to prevent movement of pedestrians.

A women motorist was blocked by the agitationists near Spencer junction when Mr. Achuthanandan was walking towards the AKG Centre after inaugurating the stir.

A family from Malappuram on the way to the Medical College Hospial was also blocked near the General Hospital junction by the volunteers. The huge posse of police personnel posted in many junctions stood mute witness even as pedestrians were prevented and abused.

The citizens, especially office-goers and students, were the worst hit on account of the stir that began in the wee hours of the day, due to the traffic restrictions along the M.G. Road and the re-routing of the city and long distance KSRTC buses.

Shops and other establishments along the Azad gate-Pulimoodu stretch downed their shutters partially fearing attack. The fuel station near the AG's office also remained closed till evening.

Meanwhile, the Trivandrum Press Club has demanded stern action against those headload workers involved in the attack. The club protested against the denial of police security even after informing the concerned authorities of the attack.

The CITU State general secretary, P. K. Gurudasan, and other leaders visited the Press Club, later, and expressed regret over the incident. The leaders have informed the club authorities that action will be taken against those responsible for the incident.
