`Centre, J&K must work together'

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI NOV. 27. The Congress today sought to underplay the controversy over the release of detenues in Jammu and Kashmir by emphasising the need for the Central and State Governments to work together. "Keeping the larger national interest in mind, there is a need for a coordinated approach between the Centre and the State," the party spokesperson, Anand Sharma, said.

The Congress possessed more details and facts on the release of detenus, but was refraining from divulging them in national interest. "If we disclose all the facts it will belie the claims of the Home Minister and the BJP, but what we want is greater coordination between the Centre and the State."

The national interest demanded greater coordination and understanding between the two Governments in combating terrorism. Mr. Sharma said that of the 26 persons, 16 were released by the courts and eight were on parole.
