Mystery shrouds death of 6 students

By Our Staff Reporter

KARIMNAGAR NOV. 27. A pall of gloom descended on Karimnagar town on Wednesday when six out of nine students, who went on a picnic to Basara, were found dead under mysterious circumstances in the Lower Manair Dam reservoir.

Police sources said that 27 students of the SRM Degree College went on a picnic to Basara in Adilabad district on Sunday morning without permission from the college authorities. The students went on their own in two Tata Sumos and one Maruti van. The students travelling in Tata Sumos returned home on Sunday evening itself, but nine students travelling in the Maruti van did not return.

Even as worried parents of the students sought the help of the police, the bodies of six students were seen floating in the swirling waters of the SRSP canal at Chintakunta village on the outskirts of the town. Subsequently, the police moved in and removed the six bodies from the reservoir. The first body was removed from the SRSP canal in Chintakuntala village and the remaining five bodies from the reservoir.

The bodies recovered have been identified as those of Rani, Ramana, Sampath Raj and Suresh, all B.Com second year students of the college, and Suman, ex-student, and Ganesh, ex-student and van driver. The remaining students are: Venugopal, Mamatha and Amitha. The van in which they were travelling is yet to be recovered.

Parents rushed to the mortuary of the District Headquarters Hospital and the shores of LMD reservoir to identify their children. Sambaiah, an RTC employee, father of Rani, said that his daughter had gone for the picnic against his will. The Superintendent of Police, R.S. Praveen Kumar, supervised the rescue operations.

Meanwhile, the Chief Minister, N. Chandrababu Naidu, expressed grief over the death of the six students. He asked the Collector, Sumita Dawra, to meet the bereaved families and express his sympathies and extend all possible help.
