By Our Special Correspondent
He was addressing a gathering at the Founder's Day Celebrations of Andhra Bank at the Shilpa Kala Vedika at Shilparamam here on Wednesday. The occasion was marked by the launch of the `mobile banking' services of Andhra Bank, the bank's e-seva business (started at Jubilee Hills and Prakashnagar branches), and the Andhra Bank Institute of Rural Development (at Srikakulam), all by the Chief Minister. Mr. Naidu also urged banks to step up the use of Information Technology (IT) for networking leading to real time transactions, and said in this era of increasing competitiveness use of IT was cost effective and also benefitted customers. He said e-seva was now available at 25 centres and over 6 lakh transactions had been recorded last month, and more services will be added. The Government proposes to extend e-seva services to all the 117 municipalities by March, he said. Mr. Naidu, who presented awards for Self Help Groups (SHGs) and weaker sections (assisted by Andhra Bank), spoke appreciatively of the bank's role. Banks had advanced portfolio of over 10 per cent for weaker sections and 7 per cent for women. B. Vasanthan, Chairman and Managing Director, Andhra Bank, announced reduction of interest rate for SHGs to 9.5 per cent effective November 28. He also announced the bank's commitment to sponsor events upto Rs.1 crore at the forthcoming National Games at Gachibowli. Andhra Bank, he said, had been rated among the top three in the country in terms of efficiency. It was in the top 100 commercial banks globally this year, for the first time. With a customer base of over 1 crore, it now had business of over Rs.30,000 crores, against Rs.177 crores in 1972, he said. Mr. Vasanthan also inaugurated 15 ATMs of the bank today, taking the total to 118 across the country. The Institute of Rural Development at Srikakulam will be operational with immediate effect. It was the third institute to be taken up by the Andhra Bank Rural Development Trust, whose main aim was to carry out rural development programmes. The institute will conduct a variety of short and long term training courses. Mr. Naidu presented awards to best bank employees and branches and zones as well on the occasion.
