Autonomy crucial for solving J&K problems: Tarigami

By Our Staff Reporter

Jammu Nov. 27. The general secretary of the CPI(M) in Jammu and Kashmir, Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami, said today that the issue of autonomy should get the utmost attention for resolving the problems of the State.

Speaking in the Assembly during a debate on the Governor's address, he said, "A political settlement is important to solve the problems in the State. And the restoration of autonomy remains central to it." He said the spirit behind the instrument of accession, which the State signed on October 26, 1947, was autonomy and thereby, its restoration was essential.

Criticising those opposed to autonomy, he said, "Autonomy ittehad ka sawal hai (Autonomy is the basis for the unity of the country). Only those who do not want Jammu and Kashmir to remain with India are against autonomy. Autonomy will only strengthen the bonds of the country with the State and this should be understood by the people."

"In the coalition's common minimum programme, we have gone as far as saying that we should hold a meaningful dialogue with even those who are outside the democratic platform. Obviously, the CMP is not against the issue of autonomy and its restoration in the State." If the issue was absent from the CMP, the CPI(M) would not have supported the Government, he said.
