Mani should not be released: Subbaiah

By Our Staff Reporter

Bangalore Nov. 27. The JD(S) leader, A.K. Subbaiah, today appealed to the Supreme Court to take suo motu cognisance of the State Cabinet decision to withdraw cases against Kolathur Mani, and sought action to prevent his release.

However, addressing presspersons here, he said would not file a public interest litigation against the release of Mani, whose services as emissary the forest brigand, Veerappan, has demanded, to negotiate the release of the former minister, H. Nagappa.

He criticised the Chief Minister, S.M. Krishna for the decision to withdraw cases against Mani, as well as the Opposition parties for requesting Mr. Krishna to take steps to release Mani. They had done so for votes, he said, and added that they had abdicated their responsibility to the law-abiding people.

Mr. Subbaiah, former President of the State unit of the BJP, said the attitude of mathadhipathis was no less shameful when they asked the Government "to do everything" to secure the release of Mr. Nagappa.

He criticised Mr. Krishna for failing to launch operations to free the film star, Rajkumar, when he was kidnapped by Veerappan, and said the bandit would not have harmed his captive. The situation was similar now, according to him.

Commending C. Dinakar's book, he said motives should not be attributed to the action of the former DG and IGP. Mr. Dinakar's suggestions during his tenure were not accepted by the Government, and he was not responsible for that. Mr. Subbaiah accused Ramakrishna Hegde, of scuttling the efforts to merge the JD(S) and the JD(U). The merger, he said, was impossible, as Mr. Hegde and the former Prime Minister, H.D. Deve Gowda, were not in a position to hold discussions with each other.
