By Raghunandan Gokhale
Surya Sekhar Ganguly
The 18-year old, who is yet to lose a game in his three year stint with IOC, was awarded the first prize by Mr. M.S. Ramchandran, President of Petroleum Sports Control Board and CMD of Indian Oil Corporation. GM K. Sasikiran's (7.5) valiant attempt for a win was frustrated by his ONGC colleague Sandipan Chanda (6.5), who claimed a draw by threefold repetition, and the top-seed had to be satisfied with the second place. Ganguly, who had helped IOC retain its supremacy for the team's title, was in full cry against British Champion R.B. Ramesh from the black side of King pawn game. Ramesh lost tamely to Ganguly and Sasi had to beat Sandipan to catch him at the top. However the Calcutta junior played solidly and claimed his well deserved half point, which earned him fifth place in the final rankings. IM Lanka Ravi (6.5) of ONGC, who had lost to Sasi in the eighth round from the white pieces, played with a vengeance to snatch a draw from GM Abhijit Kunte after a bitter battle. Ravi and Abhijit finished third and fourth respectively. The newcomer to the petroleum chess field, M.R. Venkatesh (6.5) of BPCL bravely put behind his penultimate round loss to Ganguly and scored an important win over P. Konguvel in the ninth and final round to pick up the sixth prize. Final standings: 1. GM S.S. Ganguly (IOC) 8 points, 2. GM K. Sasikiran (ONGC) 7.5, 3. IM Lanka Ravi (ONGC) 6.5, 4. GM Abhijit Kunte (IOC) 6.5, 5. IM Sandipan Chanda (ONGC) 6.5, 6. M.R.
