The Department of Law, Kerala University and the WTO Law and Dispute Resolution Centre, School of Law, City University of Hong Kong are jointly organising a seminar on ``Integration of Human Rights and Human Development Approaches to the Reform of Governance in India'' on December 3. The seminar is in the context of an increase in national and international debates surrounding the importance of economic and social rights, right to development and their role in promoting global governance policies. Any global governance mechanism needs to be based on principles of human rights and human development. This aspect is also demonstrated by the fact that the United Nations Development Programme's (UNDP) Human Development Report (HDR) 2000 had focussed specifically on the integration of human rights and human development and the latest Human Development Report (2002) focussed on the theme of deepening of democracy, which is also a related aspect of human rights, according to C. Rajkumar, Lecturer, School of Law, City University of Hong Kong. The seminar is expected to be attended by academics, research scholars, government officials, non-governmental organisations, media and other members of the civil society. The speakers at the seminar include, N.K. Jayakumar, Dean and Head, Department of Law, Kerala University, who is the co-organiser of the seminar along with Mr. RajKumar; B. Ekbal, Vice-Chancellor, Kerala University; J.S. Verma, Chairperson, National Human Rights Commission; Peter Malanczuk, Chair Professor of Law & Director, WTO Law & Dispute Resolution Centre (WTODR Centre), School of Law, City University of Hong Kong; Michael C. Davis, Professor of Law, Department of Government and Public Administration, Chinese University of Hong Kong; Achin Chakraborty, Associate Fellow, Centre for Development Studies (CDS); Kunhaman, Professor of Economics, Kerala University; and V.R. Krishna Iyer, former Judge, Supreme Court.
